Process Cooling Chiller Replacement – Curteis Ltd, Shropshire
Service: Industrial water chiller replacement & commissioning
Client: Curteis Ltd
Location: Shropshire
Hawk HVAC Ltd were appointed by Curteis Ltd to carry out a critical process cooling upgrade, replacing a failing water chiller serving their induction furnaces.
The problem
The existing Acson water chiller was over 25 years old and had become increasingly unreliable. Acson no longer operate in the UK, meaning:
- No access to replacement parts
- High risk of unplanned downtime
- Increased threat to furnace operation and production
In addition, the legacy system used a separate external glycol tank, taking up excessive space and complicating maintenance.
Our process cooling solution
We removed the obsolete Acson chiller and replaced it with a brand new CTA industrial water chiller, purpose-designed for high-reliability process cooling.
Key improvements included:
- A built-in glycol tank, eliminating the need for a separate external vessel
- A significantly reduced system footprint outside the building
- New pipework installed to suit the upgraded chiller and layout
Due to the size and weight of the unit, the chiller was craned into position before final connection.
The system was then fully commissioned to Curteis Ltd’s exact temperature requirements, ensuring stable and consistent cooling for their induction furnaces.
To improve usability and monitoring, we also installed an intelligent controller located next to the furnaces, allowing operators to closely monitor system performance and temperatures in real time.
The result
- Reliable, modern process cooling for induction furnaces
- Elimination of obsolete equipment with no parts support
- Reduced external footprint and cleaner plant layout
- Improved system visibility and operator control
- Long-term reliability and reduced risk of downtime
